Building Capacity Through Travel Training and Skill Development
22 June, 2026
At Bayley House, building capacity is about supporting people with intellectual disability to develop practical skills, confidence and independence in ways that are meaningful to them.
Recently, a group from Bayley House took part in community based travel training as they made their way to a volunteering opportunity at the EcoCentre. The day included catching a bus from near Bayley House in Brighton, travelling by tram, ordering lunch and navigating each step of the journey together.
Travel training provides valuable opportunities for real life learning. Planning a route, using public transport, reading signs, following directions, managing time, making choices and communicating with others all help support greater confidence and independence.
The day also supported broader skill development. Ordering lunch, interacting with people in the community and taking part in volunteering gave the people we support opportunities to practise decision making, problem solving and social connection in a practical and meaningful setting.
These everyday experiences play an important role in helping people build their skills and participate more confidently in the community. With the right support, each person can work towards their goals, try new things and develop greater independence at their own pace.
At Bayley House, we are committed to creating opportunities that support people with intellectual disability to learn, grow and connect. Through travel training, volunteering and community based experiences, the people we support are building skills that can make a positive difference in daily life.
