LGBTQIA+ Position Statement
A message from our CEO, Warwick Cavanagh:
Many of you will be aware that last weekend was Mardi Gras in Sydney, and indeed Melbourne’s LGBTQIA+ community’s festival of Midsumma concluded only a few weeks ago with Pride March through St Kilda. Pride of course originally was initiated as a series of protest marches around the world and it has been only in recent decades that it has morphed into more of a celebration of gay culture. Despite many changes in community attitudes though, many people who identify as LGBTQIA+ continue to experience discrimination in both private and professional life. Indeed violence is still a real risk at times and it was distressing to read just today of a number of homophobic bashings in Sydney associated with Mardi Gras.
I am delighted today to be launching the Bayley House LGBTQIA+ Position Statement as well as inviting members of the Bayley House community to participate in a Rainbow Reference Group, the purpose of which will be to advise me and the Leadership Team on how to best ensure that Bayley House lives up to our stated values of inclusion; that we are not only genuinely welcoming of staff, clients and family members who may identify as LGBTQIA+ but that we go out of our way to ensure that everyone can come to Bayley House and be their ‘whole self’.
Bayley House is an inclusive, non-discriminatory organisation supporting people of all abilities regardless of their sexuality or gender identity. Bayley House embraces diversity and welcomes LGBTQIA+ people to the organisation. Bayley House will ensure all its policies, practices and culture are welcoming and inclusive of LGBTQIA+ people.
Bayley House will work with the community including the people we support, their families and support networks to ensure consistent service delivery for LGBTQIA+ people. Bayley House endeavours to meet the needs of all people to enable full inclusion in all aspects of service delivery.
Bayley House will work with LGBTQIA+ staff and volunteers, to ensure they feel supported and do not encounter discrimination in the workplace at any time.
Bayley House will educate staff and volunteers to promote a safe and comfortable environment for the LGBTQIA+ community. Bayley House will support initiatives which promote inclusivity and reduce discrimination encountered by LGBTQIA+ people.
Bayley House takes a zero-tolerance approach to any discrimination or harassment encountered by people within the organisation.
