Building Skills and Confidence at Holmesglen TAFE

Around Bayley In the Community

Bayley House is proud to continue our partnership with Holmesglen TAFE to offer a tailored learning program designed specifically for our community.

With a mid-year intake, this program provides program participants with the opportunity to step into a real TAFE environment and build practical skills for everyday life. The courses on offer are:

Monday’s: 22693VIC Course in Initial Adult Literacy and Numeracy

Thursday’s: 22694VIC Certificate 1 in Initial Adult Literacy and Numeracy

A Real TAFE Experience

Participants attend weekly sessions (Monday and Thursday groups), where they experience campus life, learn in a classroom environment and enjoy time in the busy cafeteria alongside other students.

Bayley House staff attend each session, providing personalised support to ensure everyone feels confident, included and able to learn at their own pace.

What Participants Learn

The program covers a wide range of practical and social skills, including:

  • Communication and Literacy: Building confidence in speaking, spelling, grammar and sharing ideas clearly
  • Digital skills: Using computers, participating in online learning, and creating content
  • Numeracy: Applying maths to everyday situations like time, counting and problem solving
  • Presentations: Developing and delivering PowerPoint presentations with growing independence
  • Social and teamwork skills: Working with others, building friendships, and engaging respectfully
  • Community Participation: Contributing to group activities and shared projects

Learning in Action

Participants develop their skills through hands-on, engaging activities. Over time, many grow from needing multiple sessions to complete a task, to working independently and confidently within a single class.

Activities include:

  • Creating and presenting PowerPoint projects
  • Participating in themed discussions and structured conversations
  • Completing digital tasks using online platforms
  • Solving word and number challenges like Wordle
  • Contributing to community boards and group projects

Each session ends with a recap, giving participants the chance to reflect on what they have learned and recognise their own progress.

More Than Just Learning

This program is about more than building skills. It is about building confidence, independence and connection.

Participants learn how to:

  • Communicate with new people
  • Navigate shared spaces like a campus
  • Work as part of a team
  • Take pride in their achievements

Positive Outcomes

Feedback from past participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Many leave the program with stronger skills, increased confidence, and a sense of achievement that carries into other areas of their lives.

We currently have vacancies our Thursday group with mid year intake.
