Hanging Ten with Housemates
24 February, 2026
Hanging out with housemates became hanging ten with housemates as some of the residents from our Bendigo Street independent living units took to the road and headed to Point Leo to join in a day of supported surfing.
The day on the waves was hosted by the Disabled Surfers Association of Australia, an organisation championed by volunteers.
Until now, only two of the residents had attended the sessions at Point Leo but with encouragement from their housemates, two more amateur surfers headed down the coast. Luke, Holly, Cassice and Maddie were supported by their house staff and prepared for a day in the water. After getting kitted out in wetsuits and receiving guidance from the experienced volunteer team, they were ready to hit the waves.
Experiences like this are a powerful reminder of what inclusive community partnerships can achieve, especially when supported by encouragement from their housemates.
Surf will be up again in March and we cannot wait to head back out to the waves. Who knows, maybe we might need to now have a surf shed at the house.
