Exhibiting community connection

Other

It hadn’t happened since 2019. Our exhibitions had been solely online but on a warm evening to kick off summer and to celebrate International Day of People with Disability, our artists proudly exhibited to the public once again.

At the beginning of this year Bayley House artists were able to gather and connect in person for the first time in many months. Together, they took part in a vote to decide on a theme that could steer this year’s exhibition. The theme of ‘Connection’ resonated with many and became a focus for their creative expression. As a result, this exhibition became a space to make visible our questions, thoughts, and conversations about how we connect.

As we connected through art-making, some dominant themes emerged. These included connection to our community, nature, special relationships, places we live and sharing food. While themes did emerge, it is significant to note that many of the artworks hold deeply personal stories. In making the artworks our artists experimented with a variety of different modes. This included collage, watercolour, dyeing, stitching and textiles work, acrylic and oil painting. The aim was for these artworks to act together to create a feeling, raise new questions and honour feeling connected.

You can watch a walk through from the evening here on our instagram.

The 2022 exhibition was officially opened by Bayside City Council Mayor Hanna El Mouallem on Friday 2 December, with many family members, friends and supporters present to celebrate the achievements of our artists.

Connection is on display at Bayside City Council Corporate Centre until the end of January 2023. You can also view and purchase artwork from our online gallery.
