Health Screening Education Sessions

Around Bayley

As part of our Health Literacy programs, we have partnered with health professionals to bring free clinics to clients within the Bayley House community who wish to take part.

Health professionals from Breast Screen Victoria, Cancer Council and Monash Health will be conducting the following clinics in conjunction with Valid.

Breast Screening Education

Presented by Breast Screen Victoria

Cervical Screening Education

Presented by Valid in conjunction with the Cancer Council and Monash Health

Second Cervical Screening (PM)

(Repeat of the first and a chance to bring families / carers along)

Bowel Screening Education

Presented by Valid

The first session for breast screening is being held at Bayley House after hours to give clients the opportunity to bring along their carer and/or family member. The session will be run by Breast Screen Victoria and the information will be simplified but thorough to best explain the process.

Staff from Bayley House will be present at these sessions, along with a radiographer and facilitators from Breast Screen Victoria. While free mammograms are only available to women between 40 and 74, women younger than this will benefit from the session as presenters will explain and demonstrate self-screening and warning signs to watch out for.

The cervical screening education sessions are being held both during program time and after hours as this is the first time we have introduced this topic to our clients. We know from research that repeat exposure is key to communicating the message. Valid will be presenting these sessions and the content has been specifically tailored to our demographic. This session is important in helping clients prepare for a cervical screen, to understand the process and help to relieve anxiety associated with getting tested.

Valid received a grant from the Cancer Council at the start of this year to prepare these sessions and offer them free of charge to our community. They have been supported by the Cancer Council with resources and worked with their teams to develop the presentation. We have also partnered with Monash Health on this session to provide the screening free of charge.

A bowel screening information session is also booked. This session will also be presented by Valid. The Cancer Council has supported the resources and Valid will deliver the presentation. These sessions are being offered in a safe, supportive space for people to learn about their health in a way that is clear, respectful and tailored to adults with intellectual disability.

Health education sessions are designed to help build understanding, reduce anxiety, and give people the chance to ask questions at their own pace, with the support of Bayley House staff if they choose.

We hope families will see these sessions as an opportunity to build confidence and knowledge around important health topics.
