Bayley Arts is Home to a Changing Places Bathroom

At Bayley Arts, we want everyone to feel welcome and included. Our Changing Places bathroom is open to the public Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm and is currently the only Changing Places bathroom in Highett. You’ll find us at 1 Avoca Street, Highett, and listed in the official Changing Places national directory, which maps all registered bathrooms across Australia.

What exactly is a Changing Places bathroom?

These bathrooms go above and beyond standard disabled toilets. Designed for people with high support needs, they include:

• Height-adjustable, adult-sized change table
• Ceiling-tracking hoist system
• Central peninsula toilet with space on both sides for carers
• Room for up to two support people, plus thoughtful features like non-slip flooring, privacy screens, wipes dispensers and large bins

Why are they so important?

• Inclusion & dignity: Without these bathrooms, many people with profound disability rely on unhygienic and undignified solutions like being changed on floors
• Stronger community participation: Changing Places enable people with high needs to leave home and engage in community life without worrying about where they’ll be able to be changed
• Caregiver wellbeing: The right equipment reduces physical strain on carers, preventing injuries and improving overall health.

There are now around 300 Changing Places bathrooms across Australia, including 135 in Victoria.
As a result of national and state initiatives, like the $17.1 million Accessible Australia program that number continues to grow.
