The NDIS has announced a key terminology update: Short Term Accommodation (STA) is now called Short Term Respite.

This change, effective from October 2025, is intended to better reflect the true purpose of the support. The NDIS aims to shift the focus from the accommodation itself to the respite provided to the participant’s primary informal supports. This change came about after the NDIS consulted with a number of participants, their families and key supports, who already felt quite comfortable with calling this service, respite.

The NDIS has updated its official guidelines on Short Term Respite to make the support easier to understand and use, outlining who can use it, what it includes, and how funding decisions are made. You can read more about the update here.
